Olimp Varasteanu
Born the 16th February 1929 Olimp Varasteanu has had from his childhood an uncommon attraction towards literature and plastic arts. As far back as 1950 he began his work of animator in the Film Studio Bucuresti from Buftea.
Olimp Varasteanu has created in Romania the first animated films out of "cut up cardboards" technique that was later followed by other animators. He was one of the group that has created and founded the "Studio Animafilm" big center of artistic cartoon creation and also he took part to the founding of the Romanian Cinema Workers Association – ACIN – that became the Cinema Workers Union.
Immediately noticed, some of his films that he created in a period of more than 40 years of artistic activity, received national and international awards. In 1964 his film "Cotidiene" (Every day's occurrences) was awarded at the Festival in Mamaia. In1969, for his film "Variatiuni" (Variations), he was awarded with the great prize the "Silver Lion" medal in the Venice Festival. His films were selected at the Festivals from Varna (Bulgaria) the film "Cosmarul"(The nightmare) and "La scaldat (Bathing) or the entire cycle of films called "Fabule antice" (Antique Fables) that have been selected for Lille (France). On occasion of different Festivals of Animation, Olimp Varasteanu has made himself friends amidst the well known animators from France, Belgium, Italy. In 1970 he was in the USA to the "Hanna and Barbera Studios" where he was already known and where he received the proposition to remain and to work there. Special notice should be made to the film he realized in 1981 "Sa nu uitam"(We shouldn't forget). Selected for the Festival of Annecy (France), it expresses his attitude against the negative phenomena of life, against wars, a pacific message filled with great humanist ideas.
The 18th of October 2007 Olimp Varasteanu departed leaving behind him the permanence and the flowers of his thinking and his talent: THE FILMS. |

George Sibianu
The director of animation films George Sibianu was born the 19th of September 1927 in Ilisesti (Suceava). He was graduated from the Institute of Plastic Arts from Bucarest in 1950. At first he works as a scenario writer and assistant director at the films of the Romanian doll animator Bob Calinescu. The art of films with dolls attract him more and more inducing him to devote himself to it. His first film as a director is in 1957 the film "Negrita's Island". He received numerous awards in national as well as in international animation Festivals. In 1968 he was awarded with the "Golden Pelican" at the Festival from Mamaia, for the film "Human Foolishness"(Prostia omeneasca) and the film "The Field"(Campul) he got the special mention in the Festival from Gijon(Spain) in 1971.
On the occasion of public presentations in front of children and grownups in Romania and in France, he was confirmed as being one of the most appreciated animation film directors. The humor and special character of his dolls in the films "Human Foolishness" and "The Field" are still our delight after so many years since they were created.
We highly prize his films and it seems his films make us become a little better and more optimistic.
