Argentinean Animation (Screening and Talk) |
|
|
I'm pleased to present at this significant HIROSHIMA Festival, to which I have been invited representing Argentina, an out of competition showing, about some works made by animators from my country. This exhibition of 90 Years of Argentinean animation, includes pioneers as Q. Cristiani, who invented and made the first cartoons in the world, and today's young animators. On this outlook we cover the classic advertising cartoon, the independent animation, the animation for feature film and TV which are exported and became evident to be strongly industrial, all of them on an integration process in Argentina with the new digital technologies.
This exhibition is not long enough to introduce all the people who have left a permanent mark on animation in Argentina, a task that exceeds the aim of this project. We promise to complete it in the future film which will show its History.
For my part, I have been lucky to take part in the developing of this modern communicational technique, going into partnership with creators of considerable stature, establishing animation production studios which films transcended due to the prominent work of exceptional artists and technicians with whom we shared learning and experience... Some of them have already left us...but we still continue making our dreams come true with the rest of them, going into partnership temporarily.
During fifty years we have had fun making any kind of tasks in the making of animated audiovisual products. And as we got paid for working daily in them, individually or as a team, we turned into professionals. In this way we made the idea, the creation of characters, the words for the jingles, the script, the animation, the filming, etc., including the monitoring at the cinematographic laboratory to get the voiced copy, final fruit of our labor.
Throughout all this years, the friendship that germinated among this group of animators has let us found the Argentinean Association of Cinema Animation, (AACA - ASIFA Argentina). On behalf of it I proudly present to your consideration this exhibition, emissary of the Argentinean talent on the audiovisual communication through the animation.

Oscar M. Desplats
Oscar M. Desplats was born in 1931 in Capital Federal, República Argentina and studied at the Pan-American School of Art (Escuela Panamericana de Arte), at the School Agency (Escuela Agencia) and at the Argentinean Cinema Club (Cine Club Argentino).
His professional activity started in1956. In 1964 he became an independent producer and in 1970 received the first prize on the category Cartoons for Television on the first Advertising Film Festival, made in Rosario, with the film "Raid Bump" ("Raid Roncha"), the first RAID Mosquito Spray commercial made from the idea to the final copy in Argentina. Later, the series continued to be produced in Argentina. In 1974, he expanded his career to a scriptwriter and executive producer of commercial shorts for his country and Latin-America, for which awarded different prizes including Finalists on CLIO(in 1978 and 1979).

In 1982, Desplats Cineanimacion began activities, following with the integral production of commercial and entertainment shorts. He produced with CPD and with a jingle of C. Trillo and RAS, "Good night Casimiro" ("Buenas noches Casimiro"), of about one minute long, a success in Argentina and Spain.
In 1988, with the incorporation of R. W. Desplats, Desplats Associated Animators S.R.L. Production Company was born, which began the digital post production in Argentina. In 1995, they consolidated their pioneer position while incorporating the digital 3D animation in a classic tradition studio, a tradition that goes on up to the present.
In 1997, he became a professor and started teaching animation at the University of the Cinema, and from 2000, at University of Palermo. He currently takes part in the preparation of another cartoons full-length film in 2D mixed with 3D, as scriptwriter and executive producer.
