The Selection was held from May 10 to 28. 53 titles were selected out of 1,764 entry works.

Being on a Selection Committee

When we heard for the first time that we would have to see and judge about 1800 films, we all were a bit shocked. The projection of all films was in the very best quality. The system of judging worked very well and helped all members of the selection committee put their most fair marks for each of the presented works.
In general we can say that the quality of many of the presented works was on a very high level. We were impressed by the great number of student films, which made us think that the art of animation has become considerably more popular among young people.
All through our watching of the films our selection criteria involved finding something new in the drawing, a curious expression, some interesting story, or any sort of highly artistic work eliciting a strange mood, poetry, sadness, fantasy or humor. At the same time, we can say that there is no recipe for making a successful film. It was interesting to see the full-scale use of the new technologies on one hand and the use of the traditional techniques like puppets, sand, painting under the camera etc on the other hand.
We were very happy to include in the competition real masterpieces of professional artists as well as many beautiful films by students. All of this makes us believe that the future of this strange art called animation is in very good hands.
